Coding the Coal Region

We would like to share an exciting FREE opportunity targeting students in grades 6 through 12

Coding the Coal Region for Students in Grades 6 through 12

This opportunity was haulted due to the Pandemic. Hoping to revisit and implement this for our students...

Good afternoon:

I hope this email finds you well. Last summer, I reached out to you to share some information about Wilkes Barre Connect’s 12-month pilot, NEPA Works Project – specifically, the Coding the Coal Region pilot program. Coding the Coal Region is a FREE, online, after-school computer programming initiative that provides students in grades 6-12 in Luzerne County with the opportunity to take instructor-led coding courses that provide pathways for Graphic Design, Game & App Development, and Web Development. The curriculum/courses are provided in partnership with Codelicious and taught by professional instructors from Penn State Wilkes-Barre.

From January to April of 2021, we successfully held our first semester of online classes with approximately 80 local students. The feedback we have been getting from students and their parents has been remarkable and indicates great interest in another round of classes – so we are thrilled to be able to offer another semester of classes over the summer.

Our summer semester of classes will run from the week of May 10th to the week of August 16th. We are offering three different courses for students of various experience levels:

·        Programming 101 – Introduction to Computational Thinking with Scratch (BEGINNER)

·        Engineering 117 – Introduction to Python (INTERMEDIATE)

·        Graphic Design 108 – Introduction to Video Game Development (ADVANCED)

We are asking for assistance in notifying your students and parents of the opportunity to participate in the second semester of this free online program. The application period for student registrations is open until Friday, April 16th, so your participation would be greatly appreciated. Interested students should have their parent/legal guardian visit our website: https://www.nepaworksproject.com/aboutctcr to find outlines and summaries for each of the courses, view available course sessions, and navigate to the registration page. With a limited number of seats in each session, it is recommended that parents register as soon as possible, as seats are reserved on a first-come, first served basis.

Thank you in advance for the opportunity and we look forward to connecting soon. If you should have any questions, please contact Shanie Mohamed at shanie@wyomingvalleychamber.org. Again, the registration period is open until Friday, April 16th, so your assistance in getting this information out to your students and parents would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you!

Shanie
